In a recent development at the Delhi International Airport, two individuals were detained by Delhi Customs over suspicions of gold smuggling, with one claiming ties to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The incident has prompted Tharoor to distance himself from any alleged wrongdoing, emphasizing the importance of adherence to legal procedures.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Tharoor clarified that the detained individual, identified as a former staff member providing part-time airport facilitation assistance, had no official association with him. Expressing surprise at the unfolding events, Tharoor highlighted the individual’s advanced age and health condition, revealing that he had been employed on compassionate grounds for part-time duties.
“While currently engaged in campaign activities in Dharamshala, I was dismayed to hear about the involvement of a former staff member in airport assistance services. I unequivocally disapprove of any illegal activities and pledge full cooperation with the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation,” Tharoor stated in his post.

The detention occurred earlier when Delhi Customs intercepted two individuals, including one who purported to be Shashi Tharoor’s personal assistant, Shiv Kumar Prasad. Prasad, reportedly possessing an aerodrome entry permit, was apprehended while receiving a package from a passenger arriving from Dubai. Subsequent investigations led to the seizure of approximately 500 grams of gold from their possession.
Reacting to the incident, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar took aim at the Congress and the CPM, alleging an “alliance of gold smugglers” within their ranks. Chandrasekhar’s remarks come amidst the political rivalry, notably in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency, where he competes against Tharoor.

The incident adds a layer of complexity to the political landscape, particularly as Tharoor vies for a third term in office. It comes in the wake of the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, where voting took place on April 26 across Kerala’s 20 constituencies, including Thiruvananthapuram, along with 88 constituencies in 13 other states and union territories during the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
