Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s comments about the people of Kashmir raising the national tricolour, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said on Sunday that it was the first time the Congress leader had recognized the achievements of the Modi government in the region.
The remark immediately drew criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who accused Gandhi of disrespecting the national flag and questioned his loyalty to the country.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said in a statement, “Rahul Gandhi has insulted the tricolour, the pride of every Indian. He has shown his true colours by making such an anti-national statement. This is not the first time he has done this – he has always been soft on separatists and terrorists.”
Patra also pointed out that Gandhi’s statement came just days after he acknowledged the achievements of the Modi government in bringing peace and development to the region. He accused Gandhi of being inconsistent and opportunistic in his political views.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many people taking sides and expressing their views on the issue. Some have criticized Gandhi for his statement, calling it unpatriotic and insensitive, while others have defended him, saying that he was only expressing solidarity with the people of Kashmir.
The conflict in Kashmir has been a contentious issue in Indian politics for decades, with both sides claiming sovereignty over the region. The Modi government has taken a hardline stance on the issue, revoking the region’s special status and cracking down on separatist movements.
However, there have been reports of human rights violations and unrest in the region, leading to criticism from some quarters. Gandhi’s remark seems to have touched a nerve among some people who feel that it undermines the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and the country’s sovereignty.
The controversy is likely to continue in the coming days, with both sides refusing to back down from their positions. It remains to be seen how the issue will play out in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh and other states, where the BJP and Congress are locked in a fierce battle for power.
